Pioneers in Casino

Some of the well-known casino pioneers in the world include Claudine Williams, Steve Wynn, and Sheldon Adelson.

Claudine Williams

As a pioneer, Claudine Williams transformed the gaming industry of the city of Las Vegas by being the first female to manage and operate a Strip casino. She is considered as one of the pioneers who shaped and helped make Las Vegas synonymous with fun and fair value. Williams left high school at the age of 15 to pursue a career in gaming and never pursued a college education thereafter. She was the first woman to own a casino and purchased her first one in Las Vegas before she was 21 years old. Williams and her husband opened the Holiday Inn-Holiday Casino in 1973 and operated it until it was sold to Harrah’s in the 1980s and was renamed Harrah’s Las Vegas. After that, she maintained an office at the resort as an advisor to the company executives. Notwithstanding her ninth-grade education and contending in what was then a mainly male dominated industry Williams dedicated her time and funds to giving others an opportunity for an education. She also proved that women could stand up to men by being the first female to qualify for the Nevada Gaming Hall of Fame and holding several major job posts in her city.

Steve Wynn

Steve Wynn, another leading developer and pioneer of the casino industry in Las Vegas, had an extraordinary vision and his impact on the gaming industry cannot be overstated. Wynn built the Mirage Resorts featuring some of the most luxurious accommodation and eye-opening entertainment in town. His second casino was the Bellagio, which comprised of an artificial lake and a gallery that housed excellent artworks. The Bellagio casino was credited for leading the reincarnation of Las Vegas as a luxury destination for affluent travellers in the 1990s. Wynn sold the Mirage Resorts in 2000 and opened what is his most expensive project to date – the Wynn Las Vegas, in 2005. A year later, he opened the Wynn Macau in Asia, the largest gaming jurisdiction.

Sheldon Adelson

Adelson and his associates bought the Sands Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas in 1988. Three years later, he demolished the casino and replaced it with the Venetian, which opened in 1999. Adelson’s plan for the Venetian was to make it more than just a casino. He wished it to be a place where people went for entertainment, shopping and dining, and hoped to appeal to more people beyond gamblers. Adelson experienced success in business, but his wealth doubled when he ventured into betting, and especially in Macau. In the early 2000s, his company was the first to invest substantially into progressing the gaming business in Macau and later built a casino resort in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Since then Adelson has expanded his casino business by establishing several casinos in different countries such as the Sands Macao (2004) which increased his personal fortune by over fourteen times and turned out to be the first Las Vegas type of casino. He went further to open the Venetian Macao Resort Hotel (2007) in Cotai and the Marina Bay Sands (2010)which was started after his Las Vegas Sands was granted a permit to build a casino on Singapore’s Marina Bay.

Biggest mistakes in casino movies

Cringe! There’s nothing worse than that moment when you’re enjoying a movie, but then an error of epic proportions ruins the whole thing for you. It could be a continuity issue, spotting a camera reflected in the star’s sunglasses, or worst of all, something you know to be just plain wrong. Whichever it is, most likely the whole film is now tainted and unwatchable, and when it comes to casino movies, there have been some doozies. Here are a few of their best/worst mess-ups.

Rounders, 1998:This is a cool, enjoyable tale of high-stakes poker. Unfortunately, if you’re a regular poker player you’ll most likely notice something off in the scene where Mike leaves Worm to play in the club. Worm gets $2,000 worth of chips to play in the $20/$40 limit game. The cashier puts four rows of green chips into the rack for him. Yup, those are $25 chips! That’s just going to be awkward in a $20/$40 game where everyone else has the yellow $20 chips. Can anyone make change? Later in the movie Mike raises Teddy KGB $1,000 straight but is seen to put down twenty black chips which are worth $2,000!

Croupier, 1998:Point of order regarding UK casinos in this one: Jack comes to the roulette wheel to replace the dealer, Matt. The shot shows that the wheel is stationary when he arrives which would never happen as when the table is open that wheel is supposed to be kept in motion.

The Cooler, 2003:Don’t use this movie for any casino etiquette tips. In the craps table scenes, the players hold the dice in two hands; that is considered bad form in most establishments, the dealers would definitely have asked them to stop.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, 1998:All bets are off when it comes to Hunter S Thompson’s epic binge around Las Vegas, so you’d be willing to accept most things in this movie. Except the fact that in the famous Circus Circus scene, where Gonzo is attempting to exit the notorious rotating carousel bar, they seem to have forgotten that it’s got a ton of mirrors. In one of those mirrors you can plainly see the camera crew shooting the scene. Hi guys, pass the mescaline!

Ocean’s Eleven, 2011:This movie is littered with stars, and mistakes. Continuity seems to have been a problem, but maybe everyone was too distracted by George and Brad’s handsomeness to notice. For example, in the early poker scene when Danny raises big there’s a water bottle in front of Topher Grace. Joshua Jackson calls – bottle disappears. Rusty calls – bottle magically reappears. Topher calls – gone, Danny shows – it’s back. The game must be crazy exciting for no one to notice this magical water bottle!

Casino Royale, 2006:I must say I was shaken, not stirred, to see this glaring error in the Bond franchise. When the superspy enters his code at the casino he puts in 836547 and later in the movies reveals the code to be ‘VESPER’ which, if you try it, is 837737 on a normal keypad. Very disappointing, 007!

Best casino jokes

“Why isn´t gambling allowed in Africa? Because of all the cheetahs.”

Got that one? Gambling has no religion, ethnicity or sex. Gambling is for everyone, and casinos are found everywhere. In fact, gamblers are so used to traveling across the globe and meeting people from all different cultures, that they are probably the most open-minded people on our planet. So without further ado, let us get you cracking with some casino jokes:

Why did the blonde bring french fries to a poker game?

– Because players were told to bring their own chips!

Husband comes rushing home in the evening, all excited.

“Mary, pack your stuff! I just won a million bucks off the roulette table!!”

“Oh, dear, how amazing! What should I pack for, the beach or skiing?”

“I don´t care, Mary, as long as you are out of the house by morning!”

How do you make a small fortune out of sports betting?

– Start out with a big fortune!

Is it true that women gamble less than men because they make less money?

– Nah, it is because women satisfy their instinct for gambling by marriage.

What is the difference between praying at the casino, and at church?

– At the casino, you actually mean it!

How do you get a sweet, old lady to curse as hell?

– Make another sweet, old lady yell “Bingo!”

So, three friends take their girlfriends to Las Vegas for some gambling. After a great weekend, they come home and do not see each other for a week until they meet up in the bar. One of them complains:

“Damn, I haven’t slept for a week. My girlfriend keeps yelling ‘Come on, Zero!’ in her sleep after playing the roulette!”

“That is nothing, says the second guy. My girlfriend keeps screaming, ‘Hit me, hit me, hit me!’ in her sleep after playing Blackjack!”

“Shut up you two, says the third pal. My girlfriend played the slots. Now I keep waking up with a sore dick and ten dollars in dimes shoved up my ass!”

One bum asked a guy for a couple of dollars.

“Will you use this money to buy alcohol?”

“Nope,” the bum replied.

“Will you use this money to gamble?”

“Hell no,” the bum replied.

“Could you come home with me for a short while?”

“Why in the world would I do that?” the bum asked, puzzled.

“So I can show my wife what happens to a man who does not drink or gamble…”

– My wife left me. She says I gamble too much. I would do anything to win her back.

– Slot machines are like sex. Everyone thinks that they are the best, but in reality, they do not have a clue what they are doing.

– They say one in every seven friends have a gambling addiction. My money is on Jim.

– Best sign that you have a gambling addiction? Your kids are named “Check” and “Raise”.
